The name Babanango translates as Father there it is - indicating the high hill which is a landmark of the area. Battlesites around Babanango Fort Prospect: This was one of the battles fought as a result of General Bothas second offensive into Natal. On the 26 September 1901 Botha launched an attack against a British post at Fort Prospect. The British defended well and the Boers were thus forced to retreat.This Battle site is situated in the Nkandla area near Babanango and Melmoth. Battle of Itala: This was the second of three important battles, that occurred as a result of Generals Bothas second invasion of Natal in second half of 1901. A British post near Mount Itala and forward party that had been placed on Mount Itala to thwart a Boer attack were engaged on the 25 and 26 of Sptember 1901. The British on Mount Itala were beaten back, but the British post near this hill stood firm and drove the Boers back. iTaleni: During this Boer-Zulu Battle of April 1838. Piet and Dirkie Uys were killed. The rest of the Boer Kommando who managed to flee this ambush were given the name of the Vlugkommando. The town of Babanango was originally part of the land grant made by King Dinizulu to the European farmers in 1885 as a reward for their assistance to him. The centre of a farming community, the town is ideally situated for visits to Isandlawana, Rorke’s Drift, the Prince Imperial Memorial and various other forts and historic sites dating back to the Anglo Zulu and Boer Wars. All the lodges and guest houses are owner run and there are specialists guides in the area. Hardly anyone goes to Babanango without visiting the famous Stan’s Pub at the Babanango Hotel. The name, meaning ‘Father, there it is; in Zulu, was derived from a prominent hill in the area.
